How does Drive Affect Your Parenting
We at NBC Camps want to encourage you in doing one of the hardest jobs in the world and one of the most important—raising amazing young men and women. Being a parent is demanding.
Having a driver's personality in your home is important to evaluate. Take a minute to evaluate your skill.
Who is the driver in your home? If this driver was silenced, how would tasks get accomplished? What are the benefits of a driver who motivates externally? What are the hazards?
One key dynamic to consider is balance. A child with no drive exhibits lack of energy, denies ownership, chooses lethargy, boredom, or wasting an exorbitant amount of time and talent on worthless activities. A child with too much drive can become volatile, stressed out, burned out, fearful of failure, or perfectionistic.
Wise parents recognize patterns in their own life which may be modeling imbalance one way or the other. Wisdom also reminds parents to examine ways they drive children toward too much intensity. Overload creates a shutdown or a meltdown. Pay attention to your intensity. Is your parenting overloading your son or daughter?
Small adjustments, encouragement, happy laughter, and rest can help bring perspective and balance.
