Six Ways to improve your trust with your teammates and coaches

“In leadership, there are no words more important than trust” – Mike Krzyzewski

Trust is crucial to great relationships on and off the basketball court. Trust is one of those cool words that have a variety of interesting meanings and twists probably because it comes from a melting pot of countries. One facet of trust means loyalty to a promise or allegiance. One facet of trust means religious faith and what you put your beliefs for protection, confidence, and help.

Sometimes it’s easier to define what trust is not. Distrust is a feeling of wariness. It causes our relationships with our team, coach, or family to feel unsafe, uncomfortable, and unpredictable. Picture a team with distrust issues. They don’t pass the ball, they don’t encourage each other, they may talk poorly about the team to other people, and they don’t like each other. A team without trust is not a team.

On the other hand, a team that trusts each other has a feeling of goodwill, friendship, and respect. Trust and teamwork are synonymous.

Six Ways to Improve Trust on Your Team

1. Respect your coach and teammates. Distrust is contagious. If you distrust your teammates and coaches, they will distrust you. If you cannot respect your coach, you should consider playing for a different program.

2. Don’t gossip or talk badly to anyone. When you go home and criticize your teammates and coaches, you may think no one hears you but that is not true. The words you say in private are communicated in your body language and everyone knows.

3. Earn trust. You earn money cent by cent and trust happens the same way. If you bankrupt your trust, it takes a long time to earn trust back.
Take care of the ball. Minimize your turnover. Be someone the team can count on to handle the ball well.

4. Be a consistent shooter. If you swing from on fire to being a bricklayer, you’re shooting is inconsistent. Build trust in your shooting by improving your consistency. Accurate, game-like repetitions every day improve your consistency.

5. Value what others value. If your teammate lends you something, return it in the shape you received it. If your coach values shirts tucked in, respect him/her by following through.

6. Exceed expectations. As a teammate, it is fun to be around, be a leader people want to emulate, be intense, and be the hardest worker on the court.
