Improve Basketball Coaching with Trigger Words
One of the key teaching principles at NBC Basketball is the importance of trigger words. These are crucial for great practices and games. They immediately reinstate concentration. These are prepared statements that you and your team have established ahead of time to trigger a task as well as an emotion.
For example, at camp, we talked about the need to be a self-starter. We gave athletes the mental picture of an old bus that wouldn’t start and required lots of outside effort to get moving versus a sports car that only needs the press of a button.
As an athlete, you are a self-starter, ready, energized, and powerful. You don’t need other people to motivate you, to fire you up, to get you to do the work. You are a self-starter. After that, all week as soon as a coach says, “Who starts your engine.” All the campers yell with intensity, “I am a self-starter.”
This trigger response needs to have buy-in from the team. As a coach, there are some triggers that you should use, and some that your team captains should have.
Triggers are some of the most powerful methods to bring concentrated energy to the forefront.
