For Parents Who Desire Reliable Children
NBC Basketball Camps wants to encourage parents in one of best jobs on earth-- working to build strong character in your children. We want to join you in your work.
Here are 4 ways to help build reliable kids.
1. Work hard to help your children develop habits for follow through. For example, require your child to help clear the dishes from the table after every meal. Have a simple consequence that is enforced EVERY time. This simple task helps build the habit of reliability. Praise effort and attitude. Do not allow a child to clear the table with a bad attitude.
2. Attitude requires more tenacious parenting than behavior. If your child is sullen, disrespectful or has a bad attitude, you have a very serious issue on your hands. Do not fear. Attitude is a habit and with love and consistency you can help your child create the habit of a great attitude.
3. Be consistent in your parenting. Do not get mad one day about a messy room and then overlook it another. Be consistent, persistent, loving and firm.
4. Model reliable actions and parenting, but also be reliable for your kids. Reliability means you are a safe parent. Safe parents listen to their children. They provide a safe space to discuss feelings and frustrations. Help your child understand that no matter what happens, you will always love them. This reliability brings peace to the home. Strife in the home is typically a sign that life together is not safe. Gratitude, love, peace, self-discipline, joy, and kindness create an atmosphere of reliability.
