Does Basketball Build Character?
Better Players Better People
A wise coach once said, “Basketball doesn’t build character, it reveals it.” At NBC Camps we have seen this principle firsthand for decades. Some of the nicest people on earth become near demonic on the basketball court as players or even more so as fans in the bleachers.
This begs the question, “What is your motivation for coaching?” Your answer will be revealed in your actions. Today, thousands of coaches make sports the most important thing in their lives. However, coaching as the number one priority in life will lead to a life of imbalance and disappointment.
The reality is that only 1% of high school athletes will get a college scholarship. Among the few who receive a college scholarship, less than 1% will play professionally. As a coach, how do you measure your life's success? Do you see basketball as a tool to bring yourself glory, or to build up someone else? Do you see your role to win at all costs?
There must be more to it! Sports can be an amazing opportunity to learn life’s most valuable lessons. It is crucial that coaches and parents help athletes make these important connections. Young athletes can often be too focused on the future glory that may or may not come. Instead, coaches and programs should help athletes focus on being right here right now. Allow this practice, this game, this season to build you as a person while building you as a meaningful coach.
