Create a powerful basketball creed for your team

Basketball creed for serious teams

Research on stewardship has found that commitment to a basketball team is proportional to a person’s giving spirit. The more faith a person has in your basketball program and desire to be a steward of the mission of the program, the more that person gives of him or herself. Conversely, the more a person gives, the more stewardship for your basketball team he or she demonstrates.

This makes sense for basketball teams and even businesses and families. Those who contribute the most, tend to care the most about the success and well being of the team or family. Take a look at how much each teammate is willing to give of their time, money and care and you will have a pretty clear idea about their level of stewardship.

This Basketball Stewardship Creed was designed to help serious basketball teams create a committed program. Having everyone participate in a basketball stewardship creed keeps the mind and the heart in alignment with team mission and purpose.

I am entrusted with the responsibility for the mood and energy of my basketball team. Mood is contagious and if I bring a negative mood to practice, if I bring low energy, complaining or blame, this dramatically affects my team and I am responsible. I am entrusted with protecting the mood and energy of the team and I protect this by bringing a great attitude, a positive mood and a life giving energy even when life is challenging. I am not a victim to my mood. I discipline my mood because I am a steward.

I am entrusted with the responsibility of the confidence of my basketball team. Confidence is something of great value and requires protection. I don’t allow my words to hurt others and I don’t allow myself to be a victim to words. I have self-compassion for my mistakes and I have compassion for the mistakes of others. I understand that mistakes are part of getting better and I know the difference between learning from a mistake and excusing poor performance. I am trustworthy with the ball and worthy of the confidence my teammates give to me. I am a steward of the confidence of my teammates.

I am entrusted with the responsibility for the health of my basketball team. Health is one of our most valuable resources. I contribute to the health of my team by protecting what is said and how it is said. I do not tolerate participating in gossip or any stories that degrade my team or my coach. I know that gossip is a cancer that spreads quickly. I do not tolerate myself gossiping and I do not tolerate listening to gossip. Grumbling and complaining about teammates or coaches are dangerous to the team. I am a steward of the health of my team and I am protective about what I say or what I allow others to say around me because I am a steward of the health of my team.

I am entrusted with the responsibility of the mission of my team. Mission is more important than ego and personal glory. When I or my teammate’s ego supersedes the mission of my team, I commit to the work necessary to protect the mission and eliminate ego. I am a steward of my team’s mission.
