Basketball team expectations

10 expectations great basketball teams should commit to exceeding.

It seems logical that as a basketball coach you should point out all your team’s weaknesses, identify the weaknesses, address them, drill them, remind people not to do these and this will help your team overcome their weaknesses. However, research has found this is not how weaknesses are best addressed. Weaknesses definitely need to be pointed out. You need to remind people best practice however, over-emphasis on weaknesses creates more weaknesses. The human mind solves problems the best in a positive environment. Research on problem-solving, growth and retaining skill work is best when the mind and attitude are positive. Negative attitudes and moods actually block creative thinking and hinder skill acquisition.

Gratitude and encouragement, not criticism and deficit are the keys to creating the team you want. If your team is doing well, everything seems to be working. When you are doing poorly, your team will continue to make mistakes unless you help change the momentum. When you, as a coach, focus on the negative and the deficits and weaknesses, your team moves where it is looking. The mind focusing on eliminating mistakes becomes more afraid of making mistakes, plays more tentatively, risks less, and shuts down the energy to create. Critical attitudes, frustration, anger, and irritation will ruin your practice and your future. You are responsible for your mood. Mood on a team is contagious. A negative attitude is worse than the flu. Get your team in a healthy space by requiring a positive mental attitude before stepping on the court.

If you are in a foul mood, you can guarantee that your students will catch it. Positive energy creates more positive energy. Think about the times in your life when you felt you could run through a brick wall if needed. What caused you to feel this way? Probably two powerful emotions: either anger or joy. Anger is no doubt a powerful emotion but it is a brutal way to live and will burn up everything you love. On the other hand, joy is transformational. Joy is the deepest gratitude and a feeling of greatest hope. When people believe in you, it is healing. You can be this kind of coach. You can be a person who helps players believe deeply and run through any obstacle in their path. What will you choose?
