1 minute parenting tip on the importance of time
At NBC Basketball Camps, we want to encourage parents to be their best. This is a tough job but well worth the effort. Just like training to be a great player is important, even more so is the importance of training to be a great parent. We would never dream of going to a doctor without any training. Yet many parents don't get mentoring and training on one of their most important jobs.
This month, consider your time you spend with your son or daughter. Research on time with children is both motivating and convicting. Most issues in the home can be solved with intentional, daily, loving time spent one-on-one. Positive and appropriate loving touch, words of encouragement, time spent learning and working together builds strong families. Take a look at your lifestyle. Does everyone come home and go to his or her own room? Is media the primary focal point of interaction?
Relationships are built by personal investment: conversation, mutual projects, laughter, joy and getting to know each other. Are you in a tough relationship? Take time with that child one-on-one. Get away from phones, TVs and distractions. Ask forgiveness for the ways you have hurt this relationship.
Listen. Delight in your child. Your eyes of critique are life crushing. A tough relationship has been sown over many months or years. It will take time to heal. Invest the time.
